Our Curriculum

Science and ICT

Science fosters a natural curiosity about the world. Children naturally engage with the world around them and our science curriculum provides the opportunity for this to be nurtured, their knowledge enhanced and their understanding to be developed. We value scientific enquiry and investigation as an important aspect of the science curriculum. Children are able to plan, make links between their ideas and communicate their findings using rich scientific language and through conventional diagrams, charts and graphs allowing them to continue to reflect on the work in a meaningful way.

We are fully aware of the huge role played by technology and that it is a vital element of today's society. With this in mind, we aim to develop the children's use of technology in all subjects to prepare and enable them to be fully digitally literate with the skills that they need for the future.

Humanities

We want to enrich our pupils with a strong knowledge of the world around us, both past and present. Through fun and interactive lessons pupils are able to acquire the skills to explore and build on the knowledge we share with them. The children use a variety of resources such as ICT and the Lobster Library to develop research skills and questioning abilities. Our History curriculum takes the pupils on a journey beginning with the Dinosaurs right up to current history. Our Geography curriculum similarly takes the children on journey from discovering about their own locality to that of people all around the world.

Our school is proud to be drawn from a diverse and multi-cultural community. We strive to develop children's knowledge and understanding but above all mutual respect of the religious and spiritual beliefs of different religions and cultures.

Design Technology (DT)

Design and Technology is an inspiring, practical subject that provides children with an opportunity to tackle problems of a practical nature. The cross-curricular nature of Design and Technology offers a setting for our pupils to apply knowledge and skills from a number of other subjects including art, computing, history, maths and science. Through the evaluation of past and present design and technology, pupils develop a critical understanding of its impact on daily life and the wider world. Skills are developed using tools and equipment to design and make products that solve real and relevant problems within a variety of contexts. Children learn independently and in groups, and they plan, design, make and evaluate their work.

Creative Arts

Art and Design provides all children with the opportunity to express themselves imaginatively and creatively. The study and making of art allows children to develop their understanding of the world around them. Through a carefully planned curriculum pupils learn the part that Art and Design plays in their lives and the lives of others, in contemporary life and in different times and cultures. Pupils at
The South Norwood Academy are exposed to many visual, tactile and sensory experiences, embedded within a range of subjects. Alongside this Art and Design is taught as a 'discrete' subject where pupils
learn specific skills, and the work created is valued and assessed. This ensures progression in art, and its place as a valuable part of the learning process.

Music at The South Norwood Academy is an emerging area of the curriculum. Music is delivered through a combination of Performance/Composition-focused group sessions, taught by a specialist music teacher, alongside in-class music Appraisal taught by class teachers.  In addition, children at The South Norwood Academy attend weekly singing assemblies as well as having the opportunity to join the Singing Club.

Physical Education (PE)

As a School, we actively support and encourage all our pupils to adopt a positive and healthy lifestyle. All pupils are given the opportunity to experience team games, dance, gymnastics, swimming and athletics, among other skills. A combination of Sports Coaches and Class Teachers deliver the PE curriculum as well as providing extra-curricular clubs for both Key Stage 1 and 2, including girls' and boys' Football, Netball, Taekwondo and Handball.
