Our Curriculum

"We are committed to building futures in a welcoming and supportive learning environment in which all children feel valued and challenged to achieve their full potential and given opportunities to develop their learning and thinking skills for life."

At West Thornton we want to engage pupils to become skilled and self motivated, lifelong learners, through an enjoyable, memorable curriculum which provides pupils with:

A Creative school is a place where:-

Everybody wonders why, tries out new things, sees things from each other’s points of view, learns from mistakes, and learns together.

Guy Claxton

"Education's purpose is to replace an empty mind with an open one"

Malcolm Forbes

The curriculum is based on the concept of ‘learning challenges’, which the children respond well to and enjoy. Pupils have greater engagement in their learning - it is more relevant and they have a greater say.

"The lessons at West Thornton are fun and I learn something new everyday."

Year 6 pupil

Our teachers have high expectations of all pupils and plan activities which make children think. The teachers’ role is primarily one of asking questions rather than giving answers.

At West Thornton we have spent many years developing a curriculum that is exciting, challenging and responsive to children’s needs and interests. Our curriculum covers all the requirements of the National Curriculum but is arranged around a number of enquiry based themes for each year group. It works on the philosophy that pupils are more engaged when they are interested in the subject matter and delivery, and that they enjoy responding to a challenge. It allows scope for the teacher to plan some of the content around the pupils’ own interests and enable learners to take the enquiry off in their own direction. This is a key feature. T

"I enjoy learning at West Thornton Academy because West Thornton prepares me for my future and teaches me skills that I will always use."

Year 3 pupil

Our learning challenge curriculum is built on the life-long learning agenda and designed to raise the aspirations of children to see education as relevant to them for as long as possible into the future.
