21st Century Technology

At West Thornton Primary Academy, students work in open learning zones with iPad and other technology to foster independent learning, collaboration, and effective mobile uses of technology. The vision for the academy is to create opportunities for students as dreamers, idea makers and innovators, so they can thrive and develop as divergent thinkers, responsible role models and leaders to carve out their own futures.

We aim to ensure that all pupils:

- can understand and apply the fundamental principles and concepts of computer science, including abstraction, logic, algorithms and data representation
- can analyse problems in computational terms, and have repeated practical experience of writing computer programs in order to solve such problems
- can evaluate and apply information technology, including new or unfamiliar technologies, analytically to solve problems
- are responsible, competent, confident and creative users of information and communication technology

We have been awarded with the Apple Distinguished School mark which is a prestigious award that schools can only be invited to apply for. This is a fantastic accolade for the the work we do to enhance the learning experience through the use of technology. Apple describe the award as:

'Apple Distinguished Schools are centres of leadership and educational excellence that demonstrate Apple’s vision for learning with technology — and we believe they are some of the most innovative schools in the world'
