Curriculum Areas

Science @ WTPAAt West Thornton, we see science as a way of children developing a sense of enquiry and extending their knowledge and understanding of the world around them. A huge emphasis is placed on scientific enquiry and children using investigations to add to their knowledge of how the world is constructed. Children are fascinated by the world around them and Science is a medium through which their understanding can be developed in a meaningful way.

At West Thornton, we understand that today’s children are living in an ever-changing, highly developed, technological society. We feel it is essential for all pupils to gain the confidence and ability to prepare them for this and value the contribution that technologycan make for the benefit of not only our pupils, but staff, parents and governors.

The Arts

At West Thornton we give a high priority to the arts and aim to develop pupils’ skills, knowledge and appreciation in music, art and drama. We acknowledge the powerful effect work in these areas can have on pupils, and the transferable skills that are developed, as well as confidence. To this end our curriculum gives each year group at least one arts lead LC unit per year and an arts challenge focus in every unit.

Time and Place studies

We want our pupils to develop an appreciation of their place in time and space. To know that they are a product of the past and their actions will have an affect on the future. We emphasise the enquiry skills prevalent in these subjects and seek to develop pupils reasoning and questioning abilities.

The emphasis is given to the teaching of skills in these areas over subject content.  Our curriculum in these areas has been modified to have a more local dimension and partly reflect the history and geography of our immediate environment.

Design and Technology (DT)

At West Thornton, DT is taught with a cross-curricular approach. Our curriculum develops children’s collaborative, creative thinking and problem solving skills and gives the children the opportunity to experience real life problems and scenarios in which DT can be applied.

We try to make DT a fun learning experience whether it be through the creation of a Wallace and Grommit style animation or coming up with an enticing new soup.

Religious Education

As a multi-faith school we feel the responsibility to promote tolerance and understanding of all religious faiths. Our curriculum gives each year group a unit which focuses on a different faith and others which are integrated in to other LC’s. These are planned to coincide with celebrations of major festivals in our school.

Modern Foreign Languages (MFL)

At West Thornton we have chosen Spanish to be our target language for KS2.  In addition to this, we are keen to foster a passion for learning about languages and other cultures in our FS and KS1 children. Therefore, we introduce our Year 1 and 2 children to MFL through games, stories, videos, and interactive technologies, focussing around vocabulary and intercultural understanding, to initiate and nurture the idea of themselves as citizens of a global community.

In KS2 we use a variety of techniques to encourage the children to have an active engagement in the modern foreign language. These include: games, role-play, songs (particularly action songs), and the use of interactive resources.  We emphasise the listening and speaking skills over the reading and writing skills.

PE and Healthy Living

We actively encourage all our pupils to adopt a positive and healthy lifestyle. All pupils are giving opportunities in games, dance, gym, swimming and outdoor adventurous learning. Sports coaches provide good quality games lessons whilst a thriving extra curricular calendar of active clubs are open to all. We also encourage pupils to try new and different activities. Where it is logical, PE lessons are tied to the theme of the unit. Other opportunities are planned  for in LC units to cover themes of growing, living together, and relationships education.
